The Environmental Chemistry Laboratory (ECL) provides expertise to the Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) in analysis of consumer products, environmental and biological samples, method development, quality assurance, data evaluation, and consulting. As a Research Scientist III you will have the opportunity to:

• Plan, organize, manage, and implement highly complex scientific research studies in the areas of identification and measurements of toxic chemicals in wildlife, humans, and the environment involving biological and environmental fate and transport of contaminants and their degradation or metabolic products and exposure pathways using the latest instrumentation and methodologies
• Select, evaluate, and adapt methods, techniques, and procedures to optimize accuracy and precision of results in compliance with ISO 17025
• Operate the state-of-the-art Gas and Liquid Chromatography/High-Resolution Mass Spectrometry (GC and LC/HRMS), Gas and Liquid Chromatography-Tandem Mass Spectrometry (GC- and LC-MS/MS) and other hyphenated instruments coupled with isotope dilution methods for the analysis of chemical contaminants in environmental and biological samples
• Maintain expertise by assessing recent scientific developments and new technologies in the areas of monitoring, sampling, and analysis of toxic chemicals of interest or concern to DTSC and the California Environmental Contaminant Biomonitoring Program (also known as Biomonitoring California)

Desirable Qualifications We Look For:

• Experience with analytical instruments (e.g. GC or LC-MS/MS, GC or LC-High Resolution MS)
• Experience with method development in analytical chemistry or related field
• Experience in environmental and/or biological samples preparation and analysis
• Experience working under a Quality Management System
• Experience working with a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS)
• Experience in preparing scientific reports, presentations, and publications of results of research studies and surveys
